The wonderful passage from the Psalms displays the deep creative playfulness of the Holy One creator of the heavens and the earth. The whale that amazing creature of the deep that sings and leaps above the waves was created according to the Psalmist “for the sport/the fun of it”. A friend of mine once expounded on this passage by saying, quite correctly to my way of thinking, that the whale was God’s “rubber ducky” the image is one of pure joy!

I believe that we are close to God not when we feel righteous (a slippery slope at best) but when we are joyfully creative. Let us succumb more often to joy!
